Can You Reverse Gingivitis Before It Becomes Periodontitis?

Close up of man displaying inflamed gums & gingivitis Healthy gums are the foundation of a strong, beautiful smile. It’s just as important to care for them as it is for your teeth! Without proper gum care, you could develop gingivitis, the early stage of gum disease. And, if that goes untreated, it can advance to periodontitis — a more severe condition that’s harder to manage. So what can you do about it?

Dr. Louisa Gallegos, a highly skilled prosthodontist with years of experience, treats patients in Denver, Colorado. She can guide you in restoring your gum health and protecting your smile.

What Is Gingivitis and How Does It Start?

Gingivitis is the first stage of gum disease, and it often starts quietly. You might notice your gums looking a little red, swollen, or even bleeding when you brush your teeth. This inflammation is usually caused by plaque buildup (a sticky film of bacteria that forms on your teeth when you don’t brush and floss regularly). Over time, this plaque hardens into tartar, irritating your gums and leading to gingivitis.

Can Gingivitis Be Reversed?

The good news is that you can halt gingivitis and heal your gums, especially when you catch it early. Your oral hygiene will make a difference here. Brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and using an antibacterial mouthwash can help remove plaque before it turns into tartar. Stay on track with regular dental check-ups and professional cleanings to keep gingivitis at bay.

By treating gingivitis early on, you can prevent it from getting worse.

Preventing Periodontitis

If gingivitis goes untreated, it can progress to a more serious form of gum disease called periodontitis.  Periodontitis damages the tissues and bones that support your teeth, which often leads to tooth loss. It is not fully reversible like gingivitis is. Once periodontitis has developed, the damage to the gums, bone, and connective tissue is permanent. However, with regular dental visits and proper home care, you can prevent periodontitis from taking hold.
